paste fishing by steve cowley
lots of people think paste fishing is difficult, but on a fishery like high flyer you can get a real feel for the method. with fish responding to positive feeding you can put a good bag together using paste as the choice hookbait now the water has started to warm up.
steve cowley has chosen to sit on peg one. there is a stiff breeze blowing from right to left and carp are topping and splashing all around the area. his paste is made from swimstim green and some softened dynamite pellets, steve prefers to fish with a more stiffer paste explaining that if it is too soft it can falling off the hook before a fish can get a chance to eat it. soft paste is fine if you have no tow and fishing a flat bottom, but steve prefers to fish just up the marginal shelf dragging it up the slope so he can set the float correctly.

todays set up is garbolino pure latex 14/16 with a kc carpa force 4 x 16 on .015 preston powerline direct to a size 12 maver eagle hook with a bulk of shot 12" from the hook. the rig is undershotted so that the weight of the paste pulls the bristle down halfway, leaving about an inch showing. when the paste falls off the hook the whole bristle shows. steve has decided to fish at 4-5 mts in 6 feet of water just up the shelf.

he kicks off the swim by cupping in a potfull of 3mm softened swimstim pellets and a few grains of corn. corn is another fantastic hookbait and this will be steves change hookbait. steve ships out and pulls the rig up the slope setting the float correctly and straight away has signs of fish over the feed area. the float is pulling down slowly but steve knows this is just liners and is waiting for that sharp pull on the float before striking.

he doesnt have to wait long and is into a small carp which is in the net in no time. steve rebaits and is into another in quick fashion. this repeats itself for another few fish but then steve misses the next four bites and puts this down to roach. steve puts a grain of corn on the hook and is met with a roach on its way to the 1lb mark. when the carp have eaten all the loosefeed they back off letting the roach get a look in, so its time for another potfull of bait.

back over the area with paste on the hook sees steve putting more and more carp in the net. feeding at the right time keeps the carp coming on the paste. its not long before one of the bigger carp is hooked and taking elastic from the pole. some of these carp are real lumps and they try for the other side of the lake on the first run. after a few minutes steve has managed to bring the fish to the net.

as the session progresses steve manages to land many more of the larger lake residents for a fantastic afternoon on the paste.
